Hi Elena! Grazie mile for having this great site. I will be travelling with my wife to Italy for 8 days. We intend to do Rome and the Tuscany. My question is regarding travelling by car. I have travelled by car in Italy before, in the countryside of Sicily (trapani, marsala, etc). I would prefer to use a car to visit Tuscany. In which city would you recommend that we rent the car? Florence, or maybe Siena? We would probably take the train from Rome, catch the car and go along. Is pre booking important or not necesary in this part of Italy? Thanks very much for your kind help!!! Regards from Costa Rica.
Thanks for coming here
The car is definitely the best way to move around in Tuscany. Where to rent the car? I would choose between Florence or Rome directly. Trains from Rome to Siena will have to reach Florence before, that beacuse of the Tuscan trail. There are fast trains (Frecciarossa) running from Rome to Florence in about 1 hour and half.
Cars can be picked near the Florence Santa Maria Novella station. You might also consider renting the car in Rome, and so start explore suggestive and interesting sights not just in southern Tuscany but also in Lazio and in Umbria, I think to the Bolsena Lake, Civita di Bagnoregio and Orvieto. take a look at my suggested road trip from Rome to Tuscany
In any case I would recommend pre booking the car.
I’m here for any other question you may have,
Regards from Florence
