Hi Elena, I am planning a trip to Tuscany, hopefully one week in May. I am traveling with my husband. We are 48 years old and prefer travelling with a car. This would be our first visit to Tuscany. He loves to drive. We love beautiful open spaces as well as small pictoresque towns and villages. Nothing too crowded. We are open for suggestions and any recommendations on the accommodation as well as the places to visit in Tuscany and things to do. Thanks in advance… Silvija
First visit to Tuscany? You will love it! You only need to plan your trip at its best.
The car is definitely the best option! as there are many scenic drives you will really enjoy driving. Here is an example of scenic routes you may ride while here, the Via Chantigiana from Florence to Siena, and the Via Cassia from Siena south down to Rome. These ancient roads cross the most beautiful areas in Tuscany, Chianti and Val d’ Orcia, both recommended not just to visit but also to use as your base. Both areas have beautiful open spaces as well as small and picturesque towns and villages.
To get an idea on what is best to visit while here, take a look at this suggested one week itinerary in Tuscany. You may spend 1 full day and one night in Florence, and then take the car to explore the countryside and its enchanting medieval hill towns. After Florence I would drive on the Chiantigiana road and start to explore the Chianti. You may also spend a few nights here as Chianti is also a great home base to go exploring Tuscan sites; among them don’t miss San Gimignano and Monteriggioni.
I love Villa Bordoni, Villa Vignamaggio, and the Castle of Meleto, all fantastic accommodations in the heart of Chianti.
After Chianti go visit Siena and by the end of the day reach the Val d’Orcia driving along the Via Cassia. Val d’Orcia villages are some of the most beautiful in Italy. Pienza and Bagno Vignoni are particularly fascinating. Among the many accommodations I recommend Locanda del Loggiato, La Casa di Adelina, and Relais la Saracina. For more special places to stay also take a look navigating the blog.
In addition to discovering the Val d’Orcia, if you will have the time, you may head east to visit Cortona, and also a bit further south to admire Pitigliano and the other striking città del tufo. As your husband loves to drive that would be really worth the journey.
