Firstly, this is one of the best travel blogs I’ve read. So informative and helpful – thank you
We have a 10 day trip to Tuscany planned in July and will be flying in to Pisa Airport. We don’t have an itinerary planned but will need to be closer to Pisa towards the end of the trip. We’re debating whether to rent a car or whether public transport will allow us to get around and visit the various villages/towns mentioned in your blog. What do you recommend? Also, we’d like to visit Venice one day – would public transport be best for this? What are the trains like during summer? Do you recommend we book train tickets in advance?

In order to get around in Tuscany and visit the various villages/towns mentioned in my blog, a car is essential. Tuscan medieval villages are perched atop hills and it’s not always easy or convenient to rely only on public transportation. Here are my tips on how to move around in Tuscany. The only case in which you don’t need a car is of you base in Florence’s center, there you have both trains and buses right in town and you can reach most of Tuscany’s sights with no problem.
Venice is best reached using a fast train (called Frecciargento) from Florence, the train takes around 2 hours. It’s better to book train tickets in advance so to find place, you can book here. There are frequent trains during summer, and I would suggest you pass a night there just to enjoy the unique atmosphere of a unique place in the world!
