It’s amazing to know curious travel trotters like your goodself, who are providing such detailed information about Italy. Superb job !
My husband are living in England, and wanted to explore the Tuscany region in the most authentic Italian style. We fly into Perugia on May 28th, for 8 days.
Post reading your blog, I am more educated about the places to travel in Tuscany. Though unsure about how to go about it, hence seeking help.
Below are our travel preferences, criteria and queries vis a vis exploring Tuscany region, please provide us your insight on each of the below:
1. Mode of travel: We will be hiring a car from Perugia for the entire trip. Pl suggest a car company which can provide us with an Italian vintage style small car appropriate with the weather.
2. BASE Place: Choice of only one place to make as our Base to travel around Tuscany. Contemplating between Chianti, Siena or Cortona (Arezzo) or Umbria (Orvieto) & the accommodation thereof.
Ideally we would like to to make our BASE city which has some eating options, local, self sufficient vis a vis getting a place on a completely secluded hilly/landscape area. We want to experience the local slow village life.
3. Places to visit: Different villages/towns to visit in a span of 8 days from the BASE city. Have short listed a few below, kindly recommend:
a) Montefiorelle in Chianti
b) Bagno Vignoni
c) Montepulciano
d) Umbria – Assisi, Deruta
e) Civita di Bagnoregio – Lazio
f) Badia A Passignano, Chainti
g) Pienza
h) Val’dorcia
i) San Gimignano
4. Itinerary : Once we decide as our base city & nearby places to visit, would be very helpful if you could guide us with the choice of property, restaurants, wine cellars etc, things to do in that season.

Here my travel advice for your upcoming trip to Tuscany:
1. Mode of travel: I suggest you hire a Fiat 500, but the new one, as it is more comfortable to travel the curvy roads of Tuscany. The vintage Fiat 500 is beautiful but not so comfortable! You can use this site.
2. BASE Place: Considering you like to experience the local slow village life and wish a place with good eating options, I think the best base is definitely the wonderful Cortona!
Cortona is one of the most beautiful hill towns of Tuscany, and offers really breathtaking views. Cortona is fantastic in itself but is also a good base to explore the best of Tuscany and also of Umbria, follow the links to find a list of the best day tours to make from Cortona.
For your accommodation in the area, I suggest the amazing Relais la Corte dei Papi, that offers many services including interesting cooking classes. I know David, the owner of the hotel, an amiable person.
3. Places to visit: All the destinations you mention are must visits! do visit them and the ones I suggest in the blog. Together with Montepulciano and Pienza, also pay a visit to the beautiful Montalcino and the other amazing sights in Valdorcia. Some places are further than others, like Civita di Bagno Regio in Lazio, but if you don’t mind driving, they are all worth a visit. Driving through Tuscany curvy roads is also a delight in itself!
