Advise with planning trip to Tuscany

Hi Elena

Your blog is telling me to spend more time in the Siena & Val d’Orcia region
I will in Tuscany on 3~15 Sep, flying in/out Florence. It’ll be just me & my 2 year old daughter travelling. As she hated being restrained in a car seat, i would not be renting any car but will use public transport instead.
So far i thinking of spending time in Florence, Pisa & a seaside town nearby, Lucca, Siena, San Gimignano, Val d’Orica (Montalcino, Montepulciano and Pienza). And last 2/3 days in Bologna (Modena/ Parma/Reggio-Emilia/ Ferrara) for more joy of food before departure.
I love nature & countryside. Also plan to stay in a agriturismo too so my girl can enjoy her time with farm animals.
I wonder if it’s too much to do without a car & am thinking of dropping San Gimignano & Lucca off the list. And how reachable is Val d’Orcia without a car & having to manage luggages & a 2yo alone. Even thought of staying in Montepulciano or Pienza as I read up more & more…12 days trip is simply too short lol!
Any advise will be much appreciated

thanks for contacting me
Your plan is fantastic but I really think it is too much to do without a car and with a little baby. 
Siena & the Val d’Orcia region are really stunning but without a car that would be a bit difficult, especially as you will have to manage luggages. You may still stay in Siena’s center and from there take the bus to some of the villages in Val d’Orcia.
Montepulciano can actually be reached by train from Siena station in about an hour, but then you have to take a bus to take you up to the historic center. You may even consider some organized day tours from Siena to Val d’Orcia.
Here are useful tips on using Siena as your base in Tuscany. So I would plan your time this way:
1. some days in Florence, that is the best base when using public transportation. From Florence you can easily reach Lucca, Pisa, and a seaside town like Viareggio by train, they all have the train station in the center. 
2. As you love nature & countryside you might stay a farmhouse with animals or near Florence or near Siena, so that you can get to it more easily. Let me know if you’d like some suggestions.
3. Stay in Siena’s center and do some day trips to the south
