Hi,
Love your postings and making it hard to decide what is best for me. I am traveling the 3rd week in October solo I have a car rental that I will now drop in Pisa on Friday the 23rd. I will be staying at Terre Di Nano near Montalcino. I have the entire day to drive from there to Pisa to make my train at 4:29 for Genoa. I wanted to find the least stressful, scenic drive I could talk and perhaps have a wonderful lunch and walk halfway between Montalcino and Pisa. I am also concerned making any driver mistakes with the zones. My car drop off is in Pisa PISA DOWNTOWN OFFICE on Lungarno Sonnino about 1 KM from the train station. Any input or directions you can guide me would be so very appreciated. I am stressing myself out with the driving aspect of this, but the trains were sold out all day on Friday from Chiusi that I had no choice but to drive and found a better time and price is I left from Pisa. I am photographer and writer by passion and would love some tips on what drive and the time to take for this day. Is Friday a busy travel day for locals as well? I have no idea what to expect from the traffic, I have the freedom to drive around heavy traffic periods and would prefer to if possible. Many thanks in advance.

Terre di Nano is a very good place to stay.
This is the easiest route I recommend from Montalcino to Pisa, it takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes; this way you can have the time for some stops along the way. The first part of the route is the scenic one; I’d suggest a stop to visit Siena and possibly San Gimignano, both great for taking pictures.
The last part of the route, from Empoli to Pisa, is the fast SGC to Pisa, there is generally quite a bit of traffic but nothing horrible.

I found myself reading about a park near Florence that has the Appennine Colossus Statue, if I were to re-route and still drive up to Siena what path might be best to take this detour before I get to Pisa. It just looks so marvelous I think it might be a shame to miss it, but not sure about the timing. If need be I may want to re-route and miss Siena, but that drive sounds and from what I read very beautiful. I know I sound like a kid in a candy store, so many goodies to pick from!

The imposing Colossus Statue at the Medici Villa Demidoff right north of Florence is worth the visit; the park is beautiful. Just note that you’re going to find quite a bit of traffic, being near Florence. I wouldn’t miss Siena anyway
