Hi, We are planning to go to Italy next month for maybe one week in Rome and one in Tuscany region. I was thinking about using Siena as a base, maybe a little quieter than Florence but we can see Florence in a day trip. Also, I’d like to return to the Cinque Terre for a day. Is it also reasonable to make some long day trips from Sienna to the hill towns in Umbria? Do you think this is a reasonable plan? We are late in making plans for next month but did not know we would have a 2 week window until very recently so are trying to take advantage of it. Thank You!
Thanks for getting here
I completely agree with your idea to use Siena as your base in Tuscany, the place is still incredibly beautiful and surely quieter that Florence.
First of all I would suggest you pass one night in the Cinque Terre, as reaching them from Siena in one day trip is not recommended.
As for some long day trips from Siena to the hill towns in Umbria, Siena can be ok, as the most important villages of Umbria, like Todi, Perugia, Spello, and Assisi are all at about 1 hour and half distance or a bit more. In case you wish to be closer, you may consider spending one night or 2 in the beautiful Cortona.
For some suggestions on how to plan a week in Tuscany take a look here. As you are also visiting Rome, you may find this article about a road trip from Rome to Tuscany very interesting
