Ciao Elena,
My husband and i are flying to Bologna with our 2 sons (aged 4+2) in June. We lived in Florence 10 years ago and holiday in Florence or Tuscany almost every year. On our last 2 visits we stayed in the beautiful and not-too-obvious Montaione. We usually fly to Pisa and we know the provinces of Firenze, Pisa and Siena very very well but this year it is so much cheaper for us to fly to Bologna. We don’t really know the area North of Florence that well at all, of course it is less touristy and more commercial. But as i don’t want to have to drive too far after our flight (an hour is fine, 2 hours max!) I’m hoping you can recommend a nice place for us to base ourselves. We’re looking for a nice Italian town or village with nice coffee shops and local restaurants. We’re not looking for loads to do, we return for the lifestyle, the people, the food, the language – la dolce vita! We will also be aiming to do one or two day trips to Florence – Patrizio Cosi’s pasticceria and Le Volpe e l’Uva cannot be missed!!

Montaione is a very charming place with nice views and a scenic countryside! My parents live near it
So you say a nice place in northern Tuscany not too far from Bologna…soon comes to my mind the beautiful Mugello area north of Tuscany!
A fascinating area with lots of beautiful and interesting things to see, from its characteristic small villages to the beautiful Medici Villas, gardens, and castles. I suggest a visit to Villa Demidoff and its Park, to the lovely Palazzo dei Vicari in Scarperia, to the Castello del Trebbio, and to Villa di Cafaggiolo in Barberino del Mugello.
The local specialities of the Mugello are excellent! while the Lago di Bilancino offers many activities to do, including trekking.
I think Scarperia, included among the most beautiful villages of Italy, is a very nice place to stay, and with great local restaurants and cafes. Here is a detailed travel guide on all about Mugello.
The place is also ideal to reach Florence and take day trips in Tuscany. Maybe you’ve not still visited Pistoia, Vinci, Lucca, or the beautiful Casentino area of Tuscany.
