Hello Elena,
Thank you for your help a few months back, my husband and I are leaving for Tuscany tonight!!
We are spending 2 days in Florence, 3 in Pienza, and then 4 in San Gimignano.
My question is: from San Gimignano (which we are using as a base to explore), would you recommend using our rental car to explore Chianti on our own, or would it make more sense to go on an organized wine tour of the Chianti area that leaves from San Gimignano? We want the ability to explore on our own, however we also want to enjoy the wine! If you feel that the Chianti area is “seen” adequately by these tours, that would be helpful to know. If you feel these tours are limiting to exploring the Chianti area we will explore on our own and limit our wine intake that day. Thank you again!!!
Thanks for coming again Glad to give some more tips for your Tuscan stay.
As you have your own car, honestly I’d recommend you explore Chianti on your own.
That way you will have more time and the freedom to stop anywhere you like. Also by simply driving through Chianti you will have the pleasure to admire the panorama and see many wineries on the way.
Have I already suggested this article on using San Gimignano as a base in Tuscany? And in this thread you can find some of my recommendations for great wineries in Chianti.
Feel free to contact me again,
Enjoy your vacation! and then let me know how it is going
