Hello Elena,
I just saw your wonderful website and wanted recommendations on what place to choose for our Tuscany/Umbria exploration, as a homebase. We will be there for 8 days and have hired a vehicle. We will hopefully be able to do one town/activity a day and I’ve made a list of towns to visit from your site.
We are in Tuscany in May
Originally I thought I would book 8 days in a little villa in San Donato in Poggio, but I wonder if I should split my stay into 4 day parts and maybe stay another 4 days in Orvieto or Todi.
Does it make a difference given that we already have a vehicle?
Thank you,
Happy to hear my site was helpful for making a list of towns to visit in Tuscany
San Donato in Poggio is nice but as you’re going to visit also the beautiful Umbria region that is a bit further way, I would pass there 3 or 4 nights and then move either in Orvieto or Todi or in the wonderful Cortona and its countryside.
The location of Cortona on the border with Umbria makes a perfect spot for great day trips both to Umbria and Tuscany. An entire article on the blog is indeed about using Cortona as a home base to explore some very memorable sights and attractions of both regions, have a look.
Splitting your stay in 2 parts is the best thing, as it will allow you to explore even more sights! The first part in Chianti (San Donato in Poggio or any other lovely village in the area), and the second part in Cortona or in Umbria.
In Chianti as a Base to Tour Tuscany I make a list of the best day tours you can make from there!
I remain at your complete disposal,
Buon Viaggio,
elena
