Day Trip from Rome to Tuscany: What to visit?

Hi Elena,
Congratulations on your wonderful blog. Its very interesting and lot of wonderful information!

Wanted to reach out to you for a suggestion. Please let us know if you can advise.

We are a group of 4 adults travelling to Rome at end of this month.  One of the days, was planning to do a day-trip to somewhere in Tuscany – to see the country-side, vineyards, olive trees and just scenic landscape.

I was thinking of Chianti – but would that be possible in a day from Rome?  Would it better if we took train or drove ourselves or hired a car?

Or should we be in Val D’Orcia or Montaione ? Would those be more manageable for a day from Rome? Would it better if we took train or drove ourselves or hired a car?

We would really appreciate your recommendation – we have overall 4.5 days in Italy and really don’t want to miss out a view of the beautiful Tuscany.

Thanks and Regards,
Mary

Hi Mary!
I’m very happy you find my blog wonderful Thank you!
Considering that it’s a day trip from Rome I think both Chianti and Montaione would be too far away, it’s over 3 hours’ drive! You will spend all of your time driving.
The best thing is to go visiting visiting the Val d’Orcia region, honesty one of the areas of Tuscany I prefer! Its scenic soft hills, its wonderful villages, its ancient abbeys, its winding roads lined by cypress trees… really a dream! the landscape is stunning, there’s a lot to see and do. Pienza, Montalcino, Bagno Vignoni, and Montepulciano are amazing! This is also the land of great wines, great food, thermal springs and many more surprising sights!
Find detailed info and great photos about it here in my blog.  Here instead, I speak of two enchanting hill towns in Val d’Orcia: Pienza and Monticchiello. Pienza is simply fabulous, with endless views all across the valley, here are also very good restaurants and trattorias, so you may consider having lunch here. Osteria Baccus is one of my favorites; pasta, meat and cheese are fantastic!
Definitely hire a car to go exploring! More freedom and more time to visit the sights!  Tuscany is all hills and curvy roads, you can’t reach those destinations by train and it’s not easy to reach them by bus as well.
Enjoy your Italian stay and contact me again for any other question!
