Elena,
We are considering a stay in Tuscany this year to celebrate my mother in law’s 80th birthday, thinking about one week in a private villa, something nice and quaint and as a good base for exploring the region. This would likely be the first full week in August.
We will be 6 adults and 2 children (both 12).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A stay in Tuscany is a fantastic idea to celebrate your mother in law\’s 80th birthday
In Val d’Orcia, to the south of Siena, are 2 wonderful villas that I’d recommend:
Villa Mia is a stunning private villa with swimming pool offering incredible views over the countryside and Pienza, one of the most scenic and charming hill towns of Tuscany.
Villa Romantica is a luxury private villa with a unique and peculiar pool, still located near Pienza
The Val d’Orcia natural park, countryside south of Siena, is one of the most scenic and intriguing parts in the region. The landscape is enchanting as are its many medieval villages atop hills, its great food, wines, and unforgettable vistas. This can be a good base, especially to visit southern Tuscany.
In Chianti, the scenic wine region between Florence and Siena, I recommend:
The Castle of Meleto, a beautiful medieval castle, also offering accommodation in private villas
Villa Medicea di Lilliano is an amazing historic place offering accommodation in private villas. The villa, opening this upcoming season, is still in Chianti but on the Florentine hills, more close to Florence.
Chianti works great as a base to discover Tuscany and its main sights.
The blog’s post “Chianti or Valdorcia?” will help you decide on your home base
