Viareggio as a base to explore Tuscany

We are planning a trip to Tuscany at the end of August.  We have 2 kids, one will be 13 at the time of the trip and the other one almost 5.   I want to stay near the sea and take day trips in order to make it more relaxing and suitable for a 5 year old.   Is Viareggio a good base for such a trip?  What day trips would you recommend, except the obvious lie Florence and Pisa?  We will have about 11 days.   Thank you!

Hi from Tuscany!
Viareggio is one of the best destinations on the coast for families with children.
The town is lively, full of events and attractions for the little ones and for adults alike. Beaches are equipped with any necessity, so the place is ideal for summer.
This being said, consider that the location of Viareggio in the north of Tuscany can be a good base to explore especially that part of Tuscany. In case you may want to visit many more fantastic sights more south of the region, let’s say from Chianti to Val d’Orcia and Cortona, I would suggest spending about 3 or 4 nights in another location, maybe a beautiful property with pool in Chianti or in the scenic countryside of Siena.
Here are my suggestions for the best day trips having Viareggio as a base, I also include lesser known places that are actually very charming:
-Pietrasanta, the town of the artists working with marble -Pistoia, small and lovely Tuscan town
-Montecatini Terme, nice town with thermal establishments
-Lucca, one of the main and most beautiful sights in Tuscany
-The wonderful Cinque Terre: (1 hour distance), this scenic beautiful coastline in the Liguria region north of Tuscany, is one of the main attractions to visit in Italy
-Livorno, charming town on the sea, with port and great seafood
-The Chianti, wine region with scenic landscape, can be reached in about 1 hour and 40 minutes
San Gimignano, the famous hamlet with medieval towers, is at 1 and 40 minutes driving, while the beautiful Volterra at 1 hour and half distance.

Enjoy planning your vacation to Tuscany!
Have a nice day, Elena
