We will be staying in Rome but plan on being in the Tuscany region for about 4 days.  Would you recommend renting a car in Rome and driving to the Tuscany area and then returning to Rome or would you take the train to the Tuscany area and rent the car there?
We will be on our honeymoon and have really enjoyed your insight.
Thank you,

Dear Jerry and Michelle,
thanks a lot for your message, I’m happy to give some suggestions for your special holiday in Italy
If you like driving, the best thing is you rent your car in Rome and drive to Tuscany. The route from Rome to Tuscany is beautiful and offers a lot to see, not only in Tuscany and Lazio, but also in the Umbria region. There are countless amazing sights along the way!
Orte with its suggestive subterraneans, Orvieto and its stunning Duomo, the Bolsena Lake and the surreal suspended hill town of Civita di Bagnoregio, Cortona, Lake Trasimeno, the magical Val d’Orcia, Siena, the famous Chianti area, and finally Florence!
The road trip from Rome to Tuscany is so interesting that my article “From Rome to Tuscany and back: What to visit?” is entirely dedicated to it. Have a look for a detailed itinerary.
This itinerary requires a bit of time, so I’d suggest you stop here and there for one or more nights. There are lovely accommodations along the way, especially in Val d’Orcia and in Chianti.

Ciao from a sunny Florence,
