La Foce is a spectacular and vast estate rising in one of the most beautiful and impressive areas south of Siena, the Val d’Orcia valley. Fabulous hill towns like Montepulciano, Pienza, and Montalcino are only few miles away. The place is so incredibly beautiful that you ask yourself if it’s real!
The estate scenically extends for miles over fabulous verdant hills, offering one of the most picturesque views all over this enchanted valley. From here, you can admire a small country road perfectly lined with beautiful cypress trees, that climb up a gentle undulating hill; certainly the most photographed of Tuscany!
The villa was built in the late fifteenth century as a hostel for pilgrims and merchants traveling along the Via Francigena, the busy road leading to Rome from the north of Europe. But the origins of the place go back to a more distant time; an important Etruscan settlement dating from the 7th century BC was in fact recently discovered within the property.
Enchanted Garden with stunning View
At La Foce you can have the pleasure to visit one of the most beautiful and best preserved examples of early twentieth-century Italian garden. With its varied views over the typical Tuscan countryside, La Foce fully realizes the ideal of the garden of the Marchesa Iris Origo, established English writer, that bought the villa in 1924.
Both the Villa and the garden face the Orcia Valley with lovely views of Monte Amiata in the background. Lemons, roses, aromatic plants, Mediterranean trees, wisteria, wild flowers, cypress and laurel hedges, hidden paths and romantic benches in travertine stone…an heavenly place! One of the prettiest places in the world 🙂
I suggest you visit the garden during spring, when everything is colorful! The garden can be visited on a guided tour on Wednesday afternoons from 19 March to 29 October, and all weekends from 22 March to 2 November. No booking is required.
