La Cisterna nel Borgo is one of the best tuscan restaurant I’ve ever tried. It’s located in the beautiful medieval town of Rocca d’Orcia, boasting an enviable hill top position with a wonderful panoramic view over the Val d’Orcia, in the beautiful province of Siena. The Rocca (tower) dates back to the XX century, and represented a centre of strategic control over the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrims route that connected Rome to the north of Italy.
And it’s right here, at Rocca d’Orcia, near Siena, that you can enjoy one of the best tuscan meal ever! The restaurant Cisterna nel Borgo faces a very antique square, Piazza della Cisterna; the cistern is all made in stone, with carved coat of arms, and the square’s pavement is also made with large old stones crossed by grass.
The restaurant was formerly an ancient coaches house, and it’s now a very rustic place, with a vaulted ceiling, terracotta pavement and many little refined antique details, all making a very romantic and particular atmosphere. Particular care is paid to the cuisine, traditional and genuine; you’ll literally go into ecstasies for the many delicious dishes, especially of game (the wild boar is superb), steak; and the cakes are not to be missed, like the Ricotta Mousse with honey and cinnamon!
