Lucignano and the Tree of Love

Lucignano is a small village atop a hill overlooking the Valdichiana area, between Siena and Arezzo. It’s one of the most extraordinary examples of medieval town planning for its elliptical concentric roads that have come down to us intact through the centuries.

The place is beautiful and can be perfect in itself to pass a romantic getaway, in addition it also preserves a great treasure called the Tree of Life, also known as the Tree of Love and the golden Tree. The tree is a masterpiece of jewellery decorated with coral and crystals, a reliquary realized between the 14th and the 15th century. This incredible tree now seals the couples’ promises of love.

Pienza, setting for Romeo and Juliet

Pienza, small hill town of the Renaissance lying in the fabulous Val d’Orcia area, south of Siena, is so charming and suggestive to make it the perfect destination for lovers. Its lovely piazza, palaces and characteristic alleys gives it an irresistible atmosphere.

The same narrow streets of the village have names referring to love, as Via del Bacio (street of the kiss), and Via dell’Amore (the street of love). It’s not a case that the great Italian director Franco Zeffirelli, chose Pienza as the setting of the greatest love history ever known, Romeo and Juliet!

Bagno Vignoni, thermal baths and suggestive atmosphere

Among the many thermal destinations in Tuscany, I recommend the ones in Bagno Vignoni, beautiful and peculiar medieval town again in the Val d’Orcia. The Val d’Orcia in itself actually offers plenty of places to indulge in hours of absolute romance.

Bagno Vignoni is extraordinary not just for its phenomenal hot springs but also for its intriguing atmosphere. The main square is occupied by an ancient scenographic Renaissance pool, with hot waters gurgling on the surface. Often, at certain times of the day, the pool is all pervaded by a suggestive mist. That’s a great option to enjoy especially on cold winter days; outside it’s cold while you can indulge at the spa of Hotel le Terme.

Florence, inspiring magical town

Few cities in the world boast such an inspiring rooftop panorama over terracotta tiles, Renaissance architectural splendor, clock towers and spires against a background of rolling verdant hills. All the city is romantic, disclosing unexpected surprises at every corner: the romantic walk along the Lungarni, the Ponte Vecchio offering lovely views of the lights of Florence reflecting in the Arno river, Piazzale Michelangelo and one of the most beautiful and vast views over Florence and its stunning monuments, the enchanting mazes at the Boboli Gardens.

Another extraordinarily romantic place is Via dell’Erta Canina, ancient pedestrian route, paved with stone, that runs up to Viale Galileo. The road is surrounded by ancient walls, old houses, and green fields, and once up there you will have the city with its roofs and the Brunelleschi’s Dome at your feet. A magical place right in the center, where you rarely meet someone, ideal for a stroll full of romanticism.

Cortona, breathtaking views under the Tuscan sun

That’s another hill town among the most beautiful and romantic places in Tuscany. The amazing neverending view you enjoy from Cortona is enough by itself to pass romantic moments. Walk its charming streets during the day and have a romantic dinner in one of the many restaurants in town. Restaurant la Bucaccia serves excellent local dishes in a very romantic ambience and also has a little terrace with fantastic views over the Valdichiana.
